Last year Pembroke EMB (PEMB) consulted Mount Wise residents over an idea to build a small number of one-bedroom homes on Clowance Street for affordable rent. Planning permission for the new homes was granted in December 2021. If the scheme goes ahead, Plymouth Community Homes will build the homes and when they are completed, PEMB will manage them.
Attention has since turned to how to refurbish the adjacent Mount Wise Neighbourhood Centre. With funding from Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) under the ‘Power to Change’ programme, PEMB have been able to draw up a proposal and Architects drawings. Part of the plan also includes building a new multi-use games area (MUGA) to replace the existing MUGA.
After lots of discussion with potential partner organisations, PEMB have been able to identify a workable funding package to achieve the plans which would see Plymouth Argyle fund the new games area via ‘football foundation’ funding, with additional funding coming from other sources including a bid for Government funding from the ‘Community Ownership Fund’. PEMB submitted the funding bid this week with an associated business plan which demonstrates the potential benefits of a refurbished centre in terms of new services and facilities for local people.
There is also potential to run a crowdfunder campaign to try to raise some funds from local businesses and residents which would unlock some match funding from the City Council.
Over the next few months, we will need to wait for the outcome of the funding bid and allow time for Plymouth Argyle to work on their funding bid. Nothing is guaranteed as funding is always in short supply, but we have a really good opportunity to achieve this project with all the work that has gone into it so far.
Thanks for your continued support.
